Liquor Stores Near UH Main Campus

While there are smaller stores around, we heartily recommend a trip to Specs, located in downtown Houston. If you have a free lunch hour, take your appetite because Specs offers a wide variety of deli foods and a few tables where you can eat inside the store.

Bars

We have a few favorite bars in town. One is Alice's Tall Texan, in the Heights. This is a good place to have a frosty mug of beer (literally: Alice pulls them out of the freezer) or an inexpensive bottle of your favorite domestic. Note the cowboy wallpaper!

Maple Leaf Pub

A cool Canadian themed bar very close to campus. I would not advise walking there, but it is a very short car ride (less than 5 minutes). Parking is in the rear off Smith. They have a decent tap but no food.

Alabama Ice House

Distance from UH: approx. 4 miles

From Wikipedia, "In Texas, former ice houses are a cultural tradition, with many now converted into open-air bars." To get a true Texas (especially Houston) experience, you should visit one of our ice houses. No frills at all, not even air conditioning, but the beer is cold and cheap and the conversation is usually worth it. Parking can be a bit of a pain, but street parking is usually available a few blocks away.

Davenport

Great place to lounge with friends over a specialty martinis. Great restaurants in this area as well.

Exercise Facilities

You may have noticed when you looked at the Schedule that we'll be doing a lot of eating. If you'd like to counter some of this indulgence with a trip to the gym, UH has a great facility called the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center:

It's hard to get a straight answer from them about their guest policy, but you should be able to get a day pass for $6 or $8, depending (I think) on whether you are accompanied by a card-carrying member.

So pack your shorts and swimsuits and plan to enjoy UH's indoor track, cardio machines, weights, and fabulous pool.

There are 16 museums included in the Houston Museum District, which is located approximately 3 miles from the UH campus.
